Description

Build practical knowledge of U.S. hazardous materials transportation with online DOT hazmat training in English.

US DOT Hazmat Training (49 CFR) introduces the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR) and the responsibilities of employees who prepare, handle or offer hazardous materials for transportation. This self-paced course uses clear explanations, realistic examples and visual learning material to help participants understand the steps involved in safer shipping.

Who is this DOT hazmat course for?

The course provides a foundation for employees in shipping, logistics, warehousing, manufacturing, chemical distribution and freight forwarding. It is relevant to people who classify materials, select packaging, mark or label packages, prepare shipping papers, or load and unload hazardous materials. Employers should match training to each employee’s actual responsibilities.

What you will learn

  • Classification and identification: the Hazardous Materials Table, UN/NA numbers, proper shipping names, hazard classes, divisions and packing groups.
  • Packaging and communication: UN specification packaging, package markings, hazard labels, placards and limited quantity provisions.
  • Shipping preparation: shipping papers, transport documentation, safe handling and loading practices.
  • Safety and emergency awareness: personal protective equipment, emergency response and incident reporting.
  • Security and responsibilities: security awareness, an introduction to security plans and in-depth security requirements, compliance responsibilities and recordkeeping.

Online format, assessment and certificate

Study entirely online at your own pace and review the training modules before taking the multiple-choice final test. Participants receive a certificate of completion after successfully passing the assessment.

  • Language: English

  • Assessment: multiple-choice final test

How this course fits your training program

Under 49 CFR §172.704, training must address employees’ duties. Employers must ensure appropriate general awareness, function-specific, safety and security awareness training, plus in-depth security training where required. They also remain responsible for testing, certification and training records. See PHMSA’s training requirements for industry.

This course provides a broad foundation. Employers must assess additional instruction for specific products, tasks, transport modes and workplace procedures. An introduction to security plans does not replace training on an employer’s own plan.
